Street Lamps

Street Lamps

Street lamps are a raised source of light, usually built on top of a pole, on the edge of a road. These are used to provide when needed, and is a series of lamps spaced at intervals along the road or walkway.Today, street lamps also contain light-sensitive photo cells that activate automatically when light is or is not needed.

At present, street light systems have been  connected underground instead of wiring from one utility post to another.

Major advantages of street lighting include:

  • Prevention of accidents
  • Increase in safety

Research done has shown that darkness results in a large number of crashes and fatalities, especially those involving pedestrians; pedestrian fatalities are 3 to 6.75 times more likely in the dark than in daylight. Through the research done, it has also been found that street lighting has been found to reduce pedestrian crashes by approximately 50%. Moreover, lighted intersections and highway interchanges tend to have fewer crashes than unlighted intersections and interchanges.
